Description: Victor Tan Chen will discuss his new book: The
Missing Class: Portraits of the Near Poor in America (co-authored with
Katherine Newman), which gives voice to the 57 million
Americans--including 21 percent of the nation's children--sandwiched
between poor and middle class. While government programs help the needy
and politicians woo the more fortunate, this large and growing
demographic, although they've transformed their lives through hard work
and determination, are mostly invisible and ignored. The book traces
the unique problems faced by nine families and is a call to action to
change America.
